Genetics Unit Artifact

From this unit, the artifact that I've decided to use is the Blood Type Lab. In a human body the amount of cells we have are millions. Every cell has a genetic code about every person. The cell that tells the most information is known as the blood cell. According to (Whitemorre, 2009), DNA in white blood cells, tells you about a person's genetic description. White blood cells has this presumed name called "Markers" which indicates if you have any type of diseases, or cancer as well. In the human body, blood plays a major role. Without it, humans will die instantly. Blood that contains information, related to DNA about the individual or other significant information. To conclude, the Blood Type Lab, is an excellent artifact that shows how blood plays a crucial role in the human body.

Context

The artifact chosen is from the "Blood Type Lab." Blood is believed to be the most vital part in the human body, not because of it's function but by how it carries information. In the human population, there are different blood types such as Type A, Type B, Type AB and universal donor Type O. In each blood type there is a difference of how they appear or absents of particular proteins with or without antigens. With that specific protein, the DNA moved by blood, assists genetics to perform different genetic experiments to obtain people characteristics. The lab "Who Killed Off Shamari Davis", goal was to investigate and figure out who had killed Shamari. Shamari, a freshman college student who was 20 years old, who perished at her workplace. This blood lab is to create different blood reactions, when it's in contact with a different antigen, and to match it to the blood that was shown at the crime scene.

The significance of this 'Blood Type Lab,' is that blood isn't just about it's function but also how it has important DNA information encoded inside of the individual. Students are given the chance to notice the reaction of the blood when it's in contact with a different antigen, and how human blood is used to solve a crime and figure out the perpetrator. From the following activity, I learned about the factors and how the coagulation of blood occurs. For instance, a person who has type A blood, will have an antigen A on blood cells surface. If type B blood was donated to this person, since knowing he has type A, there would be a transfusion reaction. The result is that it would cause the blood to clump and also get more thick. This lab shows that by adding antigens to a suspect's blood, students can figure out the suspect's blood and match it to the blood at the crime area. Students are able to understand more about multiple alleles, and also to prevent blood coagulation.

To conclude from this Blood Type Lab, students should be encouraged to make an educated guess on what kind of blood they may have. After assuming what kind of blood they have, maybe they can also figure out what blood type there parents had as well from doing genetic crosses. Doing genetic crosses such as the four punnet square, to figure out the probability of which blood type was inherited from their parents. They can also use this knowledge to determine who in their family are able to give blood to them. The term genetics is used to describe how a gene is inherited from a particular trait from the parent, that the organism has acquired. This lab has helped students to understand this unit more, rather than reading from the text books. This lab teaches students to understand the function of blood and also DNA. Sometimes the text book doesn't have all the knowledge, and we can gain knowledge from doing different activities.
