Cardiologist

  • Typically, a cardiologist focuses on giving treatment to patients with heart arrhythmias, infections, hypertension, or defects. 

 

  • Cardiologist always asks a series of questions to their patients about their medical history, and symptoms. Also they conduct physical exams. 

  • Generally cardiologist conducts many tests, for example they perform a cardiac catherixation to give patients an appropriate treatment plan. 

  • After diagnosing the patient, cardiologists decides on a treatment, that includes prescribing a medication, and advising the patient to make some lifestyle changes. 

  • Cardiologists can't perform surgeries, even involving the chest cavity. A specialist such as a cardiovascular surgeon can perform surgeries involving the chest cavity. Cardiovascular surgeons can perform surgery on the heart and blood vessels, as they have more training and experience than cardiologists. 
  • Usually, cardiologist works with adult patients. In order to work with children patients, they need some more training to meet the requirements.

Education

  • In order to meet the prequisite, most applicants need to have 4 year bachlor's degree. 

  • After the student earning a bachelor's degree, the student must then write the Medical College Admission Test (MCAT). The score of the test and university grades will be taken into consideration when applying to a medical school.

  • Approximately, it takes 4 years to complete Medical school. If doctors who want to specialize in adult cardiology must finish another 3 years of an internal medicine residency. And must take a training program which takes 3 years in cardiology. 

  • Other doctors, who want to pursue into becoming a pediatric cardiology, must go through the same procedure.

  • If applicants want to specialize further into interventional cardiologist, they must take another one or two years of training.

  • Lastly, the applicant needs to pass the certifying exams which are, the royal college of physicans and surgeons of canada (RCPSC) to obtain a authorization from the province where he or she will be working.  

Earnings

  • There are many factors that determine the amount of money cardiologists make, such as their experience, working status, and the government. Cardiologists can either be paid anually or by contract.

  • Cardiologists are self employed, and they often get paid based on the number of patients they see. This gives them an advantage when making their income, but they have to pay for a variety of expenses. 

  • Cardiologists salary ranges around $100,000 to $400,000. Some cardiologist, who have lots of experience and further training often makes more than $500,000 anually. 

Working Conditions

  • Cardiologist works extremely long hours and they usually work in medical clinics and also hospitals. 

  • They usually work long evenings and also on the weekend. 

  • Cardiologists are not scheduled to work, but in case of emergencies they must be available. Their regular schedules are always physically and mentally challenging. 

  • Cardiologists are always facing stress everyday. This job requires you to make life-death choices concerning about their patients' health. Many Cardiologist experiences frustration and aggravation when the patients ignores the advice about making lifestyle changes. 

  • Cardiologists work with other health professionals such as other doctors and nurses. 

Attributes and Abilities 

  • They must have communication skills that are important because cardiologists must be able to communicate with the patients in a professional manner. 

  • They must be able to work under stress and pressure. Cardiologists have to work on the weekends and nightly for long hours. As they must be able to withstand stress. 

  • They also need to be hard working because during university, they need to show they are willing to learn, and to study for long hours. They need to understand all concepts, have positive working habits, be consistent with grades and evaluations. 

  • Cardiologists must be decisive as they need to have a strong mind to make important decisions concerning about the patients health. 

  • Cardiologists need to be patient and compassionate, as they must enjoy helping patients and showing courtesy toward them, even if it mean's less sleep and spare time.
